The University of Sydney International Forum: ‘The role of arts and the humanities in building international understanding’ delivered by Ms Harriet Fulbright

Ms Harriet Fulbright, wife of the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright and President of the J. William & Harriet Fulbright Centre, will speak on ‘The role of arts and the humanities in building international understanding’ at a University of Sydney International Forum on 7 December.

The University of Sydney's International Forum series brings together leaders and thinkers from around the world to present their views on strategic international issues and the way in which these issues may impact on Australia and the globe. This International Forum will be hosted in collaboration with the University’s U.S. Studies Centre and the Australian-American Fulbright Commission.

Ms Fulbright has dedicated more than five decades to serving the fields of education and the arts. She shares the vision of her late husband and a dedication to the belief that promoting education and understanding plays a crucial role in building lasting world peace. She has continued Senator Fulbright’s legacy with vigour and determination.

Ms Fulbright has spent the majority of her adult life in the fields of education and the arts and from 1997 until 2000 she was Executive Director of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities under President Clinton.

An outstanding teacher herself, she has tirelessly promoted the benefits of educational exchange throughout the world – especially between Australia and the United States. In 2006 she was invested as an Honorary Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission and Program was established in 1949 through the first ever treaty signed between Australia and the U.S. and is funded by both government and a select group of sponsors. Today the Program is the world’s largest bi-national education program, operating in over 150 countries. This year, a record number of U.S. Fulbright Scholars chose the University of Sydney as their host.

The event is the only public engagement of Ms Fulbright during her stay in Australia and provides a unique opportunity to hear this prominent advocate of international education speaking to an audience which will include diplomats, arts administrators, government and business representatives and academia.
