Each year the Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers a grant of $30,000 to an Australian institution or organisation selected to host the Fulbright Symposium. The Symposium is created around a topic of current bi-national interest between Australia and the United States and engages leading speakers from both countries. The aim of the Fulbright Symposium is to publicly demonstrate the Fulbright Commission's mission of "promoting mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and Australia through educational and cultural exchange".

2010 Fulbright 60th Anniversary Symposium
2010 Fulbright Symposium: Sustainable societies in the tropical world, will be hosted by
James Cook University, 19 and 20 August 2010.
Some of the world’s poorest and highly populated nations are located in the tropics. Extreme poverty, public health, social disadvantage, political instability and poor levels of education are key issues in many of these nations.
The 60th Aniversary Fulbright Symposium in 2010 will investigate what the United States and Australia can do singularly and collaboratively to address these key issues. James Cook University will host the event in Cairns in August with a program of international and national experts to attract participants from Australia, US and internationally.
