Fulbright Scholars can be in receipt of other scholarships concurrent with the Fulbright Scholarship, with the exception of the General Sir Monash Award. A General Sir Monash Award and a Fulbright Scholarship cannot be held concurrently.
In 2005, the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) guidelines were amended to allow Fulbright Scholars to stop the clock on their APA while undertaking a Fulbright.
Duration of the APA Award is thus not reduced by any periods related to Fulbright study or research.
Fulbright Scholars can receive payment for their services (i.e. guest lecture, performance, teaching assistance, research) in the U.S. as long as it directly relates to, and does not interfere with their Fulbright program.
Fulbright Scholars must travel on a "J-1" visa sponsored by the Fulbright Program.
It is a condition of the visa that after expiration of the Scholarship, scholars must return to Australia to reside for two years before being eligible to apply for a permanent residence or work visa in the United States.
Fulbright Scholars can return to the U.S. during this period for business and holiday visits.
The purpose of the home-residence requirement is to ensure that scholars return to Australia and carry out the exchange objective of the Fulbright Program.
Funding is for a maximum of three to twelve months, depending on the scholarship.
If staying longer, scholars are required to provide proof of funds to support the remainder of their stay in the United States.
Fulbright Scholarships must be started between July 1 and June 30 of the grant year..
Arrival in the U.S. prior to the commencement of the scholarship period usually will not be supported. Scholars are required to participate in Fulbright pre-departure activities, including the Orientation Program, Fulbright Presentation Dinner and State Receptions.
Fulbright Scholarships cannot be deferred.
The benefits offered under a Fulbright Scholarship are not transferable either in whole or in part to any other person or for any other purpose.
Any significant change in a scholar's plans from those stated in the original Scholarship application must be approved by the Fulbright Commission before any benefit under the Scholarship will be given or continued.
Applicants must prove affiliation with a host U.S. institution, via a formal letter of invitation, or proof of enrolment.
If affiliation is in progress but unconfirmed at time of application submission, please provide any email/s or copies of informal correspondence which indicate current negotiations.
An allowance for travel is provided.
Scholars are responsible for making their own travel arrangements and where possible, must use U.S. or Australian airlines for their flights to and from the United States.
