Applications for the 2012 Fulbright Australian Scholarships have closed. Applications for the 2013 Fulbright Australian Scholarships will open on 1 June 2012.

The 2012 Fulbright Scholarship in Climate Change and Clean Energy is for Australian citizens who wish to undertake 8-12 months postgraduate research or study in the United States towards an Australian degree or enrolment in a U.S. higher degree. Applications are invited from graduates with a background in the humanities or social sciences and whose research is focused on the social and economic responses to the impact of climate change and/or the development and adoption of clean energy technologies. Eligible fields may include but not be limited to economics, law, engineering, social sciences and public policy.

The Scholarships which were announced by the Prime Minister of Australia the Hon Julia Gillard and U.S. Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton in November 2010, were established to increase collaboration on clean energy research and to address the social challenges of responding and adapting to the impact of climate change.


Scholarship Benefits


The Scholarship is valued at up to AUD  65,000 and includes:

  • AUD 6,000 Travel entitlement
  • USD 4,500 Monthly stipend for a maximum of 12 months
  • USD 2,500 Establishment and baggage allowance
  • Transport and accommodation to attend an Orientation Program and the Fulbright Presentation Dinner in Australia (March)
  • Transport and accommodation to an Enrichment Seminar with international Fulbright Scholars in the U.S.
  • Professional network to U.S., Australian and international Fulbright Scholars and distinguished alumni.
  • Postgraduates can remain in the U.S. for up to one year following their Fulbright program, under ‘academic training’ to undertake work in their field in the U.S.


Note: The cost of obtaining a degree from a U.S. university can be as much as USD 40,000 per year. For this reason, applicants should investigate additional funding sources from their universities along with private and government sources.

The inaugural winner of the 2012 Fulbright Scholarship in Climate Change and Clean Energy is Mr Reuben Finighan.
